Advanced Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) interpretation programme
This new training programme has been designed to strengthen your advanced OCT interpretation skills, improve diagnostic accuracy, and support consistent, evidence based practice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of retinal anatomy, pathology, and the principles underpinning Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging.
- Accurately interpret OCT images across a broad spectrum of common and complex ocular pathologies, correlating imaging findings with clinical presentation.
- Recognise and evaluate OCT features that require urgent or routine referral to ophthalmic subspecialty services.
- Communicate OCT findings effectively within the multidisciplinary team, providing clear clinical reasoning and recommending appropriate management, monitoring, or escalation pathways
- Critically appraise the strengths, limitations, and potential sources of error in OCT imaging and incorporate these considerations into clinical decision-making.
- Integrate advanced OCT interpretation skills into clinical practice to support diagnostic accuracy, disease monitoring, and the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred ophthalmic care.
Course structure
The Advanced OCT training programme is a a 6-month programme comprising:
- An initial two face-to face study days
- A 6-month period of local work-place based training. involving completion of assessments and logbook.
- A final face to face MCQ and scenario based Assessment.

Anjali Praveen, Head of Nurse Education, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The programme will be developed and delivered by a multiprofessional team, including consultant opthalmologist, optometrist and the clinical education team.
Who is this programme for?
The Advance OCT Interpretation Programme is aimed at enhanced ophthalmic nurses, orthoptists, allied health professionals and junior optometrists working in external hospitals, community eye services and regional ophthalmology units across the UK.
