Fundoscopy training programme

This new training programme has been designed to develop knowledge and skill in fundus biomicroscopy assessment using relevant diagnostic lenses.

The programme will support learners to expand their clinical role in a variety of sub-specialist Ophthalmic settings. It will build on existing knowledge and skills, with a particular focus on basic fundoscopy skills to aid the learner to support the diagnosis of ophthalmic patients.

Course structure

The Fundoscopy training programme is a a 6-month programme comprising:

  • An initial two study days combining tutorials and fundoscopy clinical skills training.
  • A 6-month period of local work-place based training involving completion of assessments and logbook
  • A final clinical skills assessment day.

The study days will include theory about the anatomy and physiology of the fundus, slit lamp bio microscopy assessment, common fundoscopy findings (retina, macular and disc) and further investigative techniques. There will also be a practical clinical skills workshop on both days.

Who is this programme day for?

The Fundoscopy training programme is for Ophthalmic Healthcare Professionals including Ophthalmic nurses, Orthoptists and other allied professionals working in secondary care in an enhanced role.

Accreditation

A certificate of completion will be awarded on successful completion of the final assessment.

Start date

The initial study days for the first cohort to join this programme will take place on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 November 2024.

A further cohort will commence with their initial study days on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 July 2025.

There are 10 places available in each cohort.

Application criteria - important

To apply for this programme you must:

  • Have a post graduate qualification in Ophthalmology (or equivalent)
  • Be confident in the use of a slit lamp for anterior eye examination
  • Have access to clinical supervision in your workplace to complete the work-place based learning elements of the programme (a nominated supporting clinical supervisor in your workplace must be identified before joining this programme)
  • Have the opportunity to perform fundoscopy as part of your role, on completion of this programme

Funding your place

This course is an NHS Prevent & Protect Training Initiative approved course. 

Funded by Roche Products Limited, The NHS Prevent & Protect Training Initiative enables NHS Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) working within an NHS England Trust to attend UK-based medical retina training courses typically chargeable to your NHS Trust or the individual. These courses support the development of practical skills to enable/maintain the delivery of medical retina services. The fundoscopy training programme is one of the courses eligible for this funding.

If you are a nurse or AHP working within an an NHS England Trust (including Moorfields staff) you can apply for the funding, which will cover the course attendance fee and also an amount towards necessary travel and accommodation (conditions apply)

Please read the instructions below carefully to understand what to do next:

  1. First book a place on the course date of your choice (see below), selecting the option to request to make payment by invoice at checkout. This will reserve your place while your funding application is processed.
  2. Next register to apply for your funding. Once you have provided your details, you will be asked if you have already booked on to a course. You should select the option 'Yes - I can supply an invoice'. You do NOT need to upload an invoice at this stage. You will then be asked to provide the details of the course that you have booked. Review your registration details when prompted and submit your application.
  3. Finally, please advise us of your funding application number by emailing moorfields.courses@nhs.net. We will then send an invoice to the funding administration team for payment. Please note that your place on the course is not confirmed until the invoice has been paid. We will notify you when payment is received.
