Gonioscopy course

Moorfields Eye Hospital Optometry Education team is delighted to present the Gonioscopy course for ophthalmic healthcare professionals.

This is targeted at clinicians working in primary or secondary care who are interested in learning more about the use and technique of gonioscopy in their practice. All participants of the course should be proficient in the use of slit lamp biomicroscope and be registered with a regulatory body (e.g. GMC, GOC, NMC, HCPC).

This full day, in-person course will deliver a range of lectures, case discussion workshops and practical workshops taught by a mixture of hospital optometrists and a consultant ophthalmologist.

Course structure

The course will begin with a series of lectures and case studies to introduce gonioscopy and its role in clinical practice.

Topics covered include:

• Angle anatomy

• Indications and contraindications of gonioscopy

• Gonioscopy technique

• Anterior chamber angle grading and pathologies

• NICE guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of angle closure glaucoma

• Key findings of the Zhongshan Angle-closure Prevention (ZAP) trial

An image analysis workshop and presentation of case studies are also included to prepare delegates to identify angle structures, pathology, perform angle grading and interpretation of gonioscopic findings.

This will be followed by a practical workshop where delegates will have the opportunity to practice gonioscopy technique under supervision. Please note that you will be expected to carry out gonioscopy on each other as part of this workshop.

The day will conclude with a peer discussion, where delegates will apply their learning to a series of clinical case scenarios and discuss appropriate management strategies.

Learning outcomes

By the end the course delegates should be able to: 

• Define the scope and role of gonioscopy in clinical practice

• Select the appropriate gonioscopy lens for different scenarios

• Demonstrate appropriate technique of a gonioscopy examination

• Interpret and document gonioscopy findings accurately in clinical records and to correlate gonioscopy findings with other diagnostic tests and clinical assessments.

• Apply a systematic approach to angle assessment and grading

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and delegates will have opportunities for networking and discussion.

At the end of the course, you will obtain a Moorfields Education certificate of participation. CPD points are available for optometrists registered with the General Optical Council (GOC).
