Masterclass in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital diseases

Oculoplastics, lacrimal and orbital ophthalmology is a subspeciality of ophthalmology that deals with important structures that support the continued functioning, health and comfort of the ocular globe.

Oculoplastics pertains to diseases of the eyelid and conjunctiva including malignancies. Lacrimal encompasses diseases of the lacrimal drainage apparatus. Orbital ophthalmology covers diseases of the orbital bones or orbital contents.

In this course you will learn about the presentation, diagnosis, and management of oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital diseases.

Run jointly by the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital, the course with be available from Monday 30 June 2025 and will be hosted on UCL Extend, UCL's learning platform for short courses and professional education.

Course content

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Understand examination and diagnostic techniques in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital diseases.
  • Eyelid Malpositions: ptosis, ectropion, entropion, facial palsy.
  • Eyelid oncology: benign lumps and bumps, eyelid lesion excision, eyelid reconstruction.
  • Trauma: eyelid trauma, retrobulbar haemorhage/orbital compartment syndrom, orbital trauma.
  • Sockets: evisceration, enucleation.
  • Orbital disease: orbital assessment and signs, thyroid eye disease, orbital inflammation.
  • Lacrimal anatomy, physiology, pathology, investigations and management.
Teaching and structure

The course content is designed so that you can go through the topics and pre-recorded lectures online at your own pace. There will be a forum for asking questions. The course comprises:

  • 3 hours self-study
  • 7 hours of lectures (pre-recorded)
Certificates and assessment

There will be a multiple-choice quiz with 20 questions at the end of the course.

A certificate of completion will issued on completion of the multiple choice quiz and course feedback form.

Ophthalmologists are eligible for self-certification of CPD points at 1 point/hour in their portfolio.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Eyelid malposition
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy of the eyelid.
    • Analyse the anatomy, causes, history, examination, and management options in a patient with ptosis, entropion, ectropion, or facial palsy.
  • Lid oncology
    • Take a history of, examine, and diagnose periocular lesions.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the methods for eyelid lesion excision and reconstruction following tumor excision.
  • Sockets
    • Recognise the indications for, risks, and surgical steps for an evisceration and an enucleation.
  • Adnexal trauma
    • Repair a full thickness eyelid laceration and a canalicular laceration.
    • Recognise and treat a patient with a retrobulbar haemorrhage or orbital trauma.
  • Orbital
    • Recall the pathophysiology, examination, investigation, severity grading and management of thyroid eye disease.
    • Recognise the presenting features of orbital inflammatory disease.
    • Differentiate the classes of Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDS) and required screening tests.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the latest management of prednisolone related osteoporosis and gastritis.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the management of granulomatous polyangiitis, sarcoidosis, IgG4, Idiopathic orbital inflammation and orbital myositis.
  • Lacrimal
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of tear production and tear drainage, causes of as watering eye, examination, investigations and treatment of a watery eye.

Mohsan Malik

Mohsan Malik is a Specialist Registrar trained in Moorfields Eye Hospital with experience gathered in all subspecialist departments. His current subspecialist interest is in adnexal and trauma, and he is currently an acting consultant in Moorfields eye casualty. Dr. Malik has an interest in education and training and has received several recognitions and awards for his published work in this field. He is passionate about developing members of the wider multidisciplinary team to improve patient safety and outcomes, which led to the development of this unique course in vitreoretinal skills.

Raj Das-Bhaumik

Raj is module co-lead for Oculoplastics on the UCL MSc in Ophthalmology. He was appointed as Consultant Surgeon to Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2010 having completed his higher specialist training in London. He is also a consultant in undergraduate education at Moorfields and leads the physician associate programme as well as teaching medical students from four universities. He is a surgical trainer at Moorfields and teaches on the microsurgical course at The Royal College of Ophthalmology.

 
 

Hannah Timlin

Hannah is a Consultant in Adnexal Ophthalmic Surgery with subspecialist interests in Oculoplastics, Periocular Oncology and Lacrimal Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She is also a Medical Educator, tutoring St George’s Medical Students and UCL MSc Students. She has been awarded the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Ross Foundation Bursary from the British Ophthalmological Surveillance Unit, the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society Annual Publication Award, and the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Richard Collin Junior Award. She has written and published 20 academic papers and is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society.
